MONASTERY OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY – Sremski Karlovci

The Upper Church, dedicated to the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was built in 1746 on the foundations of an older church dating from the 16th century. The earliest record of this Orthodox church dates from 1559, when it was a metochion of Hilandar Monastery. The Upper Church was restored on several occasions, in 1833, 1888, 1897–1903, and 1997–1998. The restored iconostasis dates from the Baroque period and was created in the 18th century by the renowned Karlovci icon painter Dimitrije Bačević. In addition to numerous members of the clergy and prominent residents of Karlovci buried in the churchyard, the crypt of the church is the final resting place of Serbian Patriarchs Georgije Branković and Lukijan Bogdanović.
