In 1854, Johan completed the construction of the late classicist building, which was equipped with the most luxurious interior of that time. For the first time, the hotel was named “Hotel Jelisaveta” after Empress Jelisaveta (Elizabeth) of Austria, who was Franz Joseph’s wife at the time. When King Aleksandar Karađorđević the unifier married Maria, the Romanian princess at the time, the hotel changed its name to “Hotel Maria” in her honor. In 1922, it changed its name to Hotel “Kraljica Marija” (“Queen Maria”).
It gets its contemporary name in 1945, after the World War II. Since it was built it hasn’t changed its original appearance, and as a tourist facility it welcomed many travelers and celebrities from public and culture life, such as Laza Kostić, Miloš Crnjanski, Lajoš Zilahi, Duke Marko Miljanov, and Prince Tomislav Karađorđević.
The hotel features 59 rooms and 2 suites, with 98 beds in total. All rooms have a bathroom, cable TV, Wi-Fi, and a speed dial phoneline. There’s a restaurant within the hotel which serves local and international cuisine.
