SERBIAN NATIONAL THEATRE – Novi Sad

SERBIAN NATIONAL THEATRE – Novi Sad

The Serbian National Theatre, the first professional theatre among the Serbs, was founded on July 16, 1861. Initially, performances were held in inadequate spaces, namely in the hall of the Hotel ‘Jelisaveta’. In 1871, the ‘Civic Hall’ was built on Trifković Square, where performances continued until 1892, when it was demolished by government order. The landowner Lazar Dunđerski constructed a new theatre building in the courtyard of Hotel ‘Jelisaveta’ (today the Vojvodina Hotel) in 1895, designed by architect Vladimir Nikolić. The theatre building burned down on January 23, 1928. It wasn’t until March 1981 that the theatre moved into a newly constructed, purpose-built building.

Today, the theatre has three halls: the Main, Small, and Chamber stages, and maintains three ensembles: Opera, Ballet, and Drama.
