Početna / Experiences / THE TEMPLE OF TRANSLATION OF RELICS OF THE SAINT FATHER NICHOLAS – Belegiš
The first church was built in 1731 on a hill close to the Danube at a time when 240 families lived in the area. However, changes in the river’s flow eventually damaged the church beyond repair so a new one was needed. Construction began in 1924 and the new church was finished in 1926 when it was consecrated by the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Dimitrije.
It is mostly built in Byzantine style and represents one of the largest churches in diocese of Srem. The church has an important collection of prayer books which are used for services and these are mostly in Russian, dating from 1776. The chalice dates from 1776 and there is a bowl used during services which was made in 1804.
