THE PRESENTATION OF VIRGIN MARY CHURCH – Indjija

The Presentation of Virgin Mary Orthodox Church was built in 1756, during the time of Metropolitan Pavle Nenadović. It was built in terms of the middle-aged tradition that is in accordance to Raška construction school. According to its propositions it belongs to the most beautiful and the most proportional buildings from the 18th century preserved in Srem. The present iconostasis of the church according to its baroque-classical conception and ornamental decoration of the carvings, as well as to the paint work done in the baroque- rococo spirit belongs to the ninth decade of the 18th century.

At the end of the 19th century the interior of the church was painted by Jovan Štajner, the painter from Sombor, who gilded the carvings of iconostasis and restarted the icons. It is a multi-level iconostasis, and its division was done in horizontal zones depending on the position of the icons. The ornaments have typically baroque and in some places rococo forms. The last bigger reconstruction of the interior of the church was done by the academic painter Nikodim Brkić after World War II, when he painted the arcades and the walls.

Since 1970 the church has been under the protection as a cultural monument, and since 1991 it has been characterized as a cultural property of great significance.
Style: late baroque eclecticism.
