Due to wonderful natural ambient right on the bank of Danube and to enjoyable catering facilities, Beška has become the place for the nature lovers and those who enjoy fish specialties.
On the bank of Danube, on the place where the Bridge of Beška is situated today, there is Kalakača – a significant archeological locality dating from the Iron Period.
This excursion is intended for all those nature lovers and recreational types, fishing lovers and all those who want to experience the untouched nature of one part of Kovilj-Petrovaradin fen. Sailing by boat through bayou of Gardinovci, bird watching, watching wild and domestic animals, fishing, taking a swim on the sandy beaches, enjoying fish specialties are all just a small part of what you can experience.
ČORTANOVCI
Čortanovci is a famous picnic area in the National Park of Fruška Gora. It is a traditional destination for The Labor Day Celebration, and the Forest of Mihaljevci is nowadays too small to take all the lovers of nature who come to visit. This interesting village is situated right on the river bank of Danube. Apart from all the natural beauties this area is also rich with cultural-historical monuments, such as the remains of settlement from the Neolith Period, the remains of a Roman forth, the Holy Spring Savinac, where St. Sava spent some time on his journey to the Monastery of Kovilj, and Villa Stanković – the villa of the king’s vicar Radenko Stanković, built in the style of Serbian middle-aged castles, and according to the castles in Lombardy. In Čortanovci there is also one of the most beautiful beaches on this part of the Danube flow, there are attractive sandbars and islands, but also interesting hiking and mountain tracks. All these are good reasons for recommending Čortanovci to all the sports and recreation lovers, offering an active vacation in the nature. If there existed heaven for hunters and fisherman, than it would most definitely be Čortanovci. Here painters also find their inspiration and their sanctuary. For those who want to experience spiritual tranquility together with the untouched nature, apart from the independent tours, walks and sightseeing, there is a possibility of boat trips through the untouched nature of the former flow of the Danube to the Monastery of Kovilj, following the path which was used by St. Sava in the 12th century, when he went to reconcile his brother Stefan with the Hungarian King at the Monastery of Kovilj.
Another possibility for making a tour that the lovers of nature and adventure can choose is a ride along the river bank of Danube and around the slopes of Fruška Gore in old-timer jeeps dating from 1941 (Willis).
The program of the trip involves: typical breakfast for the region of Srem on the banks of Danube in Čortanovci, a drive along the Danube through Sremski Karlovci over Stražilovo by a forest path to Grgeteg Monastery, and also over the slopes of Fruška Gora to Velika Remeta Monastery. The trip continues past the famous spring “Ubavac”, through the orchards, vineyards and valleys until Krušedol Monastery is reached. The return to Čortanovci involves the visit to the spring “Kozarica” and to the remains of the Roman city Castrum Herkulus. A 50 km long drive finishes on a pontoon with a traditional lunch, domestic cakes, wine, brandy and juices made in the countryside. If anybody is interested there is a possibility of a boat ride over Danube, as well as going fishing. There can be from 3 to 20 people in a group. STARI SLANKAMEN
Stari Slankamen, a small village with streets arranged in such a way that they following the relief make an incredible ambient unity dominated by the Church of St. Nikola with its Baroque style bell tower. The remains of Celtic and Roman fortification, middle-aged fortification and the Memorial to the Battle of Slankamen tell about the strategic significance of this place found right on the river bank of Danube. This place also represented the frontier to many different empires for centuries. Right on the river bank, there is Spa of Old Slankamen with a big park, restaurants and apartments. Following the winding streets downwards, the road leads to Zagrada, a small fisherman village recognizable by cardaks, fish nets and fish specialties. A pleasant atmosphere of taking a walk along the river bank can be completed by a number of interesting organized tours on the river.
In Old Slankamen there is a possibility of a two-hour panoramic sightseeing of Slankamen from the river, a tour over the delta of the Tisa River, where according to the legend the famous Hun leader Atila was buried, a boat ride through armbands, a tour around swamps and islands…
During the summer on the banks of Danube it is possible to go swimming on the beautiful sandy beaches and islands, while there are many organized events on the jetty, followed by the sound of acoustic guitars and folklore, also involving cooking of fish soups, stews and drinking domestic wine and brandy.
