SERBIAN READING ROOM – Irig
Početna / Experiences / SERBIAN READING ROOM – Irig
A particularly valuable part of the cultural and historical heritage is the Serbian Reading Room in Irig, the first and oldest civic reading room among the Serbs, founded in 1842. It was established with the aim of preserving Serbian national identity and fostering the development of literature in all its forms. Moreover, it cultivated a spirit of tolerance and understanding among both Slavic and non-Slavic peoples.
Today, the Serbian Reading Room operates successfully in several areas: it develops and enhances its primary library activity by expanding its collections, especially its special holdings (local history and museum collections). It consistently fulfills its cultural mission—from organizing the Assembly of Librarians of Srem (since 1962), to its publishing activities, and to preserving the memory of Irig-born Borislav Mihajlović Mihiz, including awarding a prize for playwriting that bears his name.
Within the Reading Room, there is also a gallery where exhibitions by painters, sculptors, and photographers are held, featuring not only local artists but also those from a wider region.
