MONUMENT TO THE BURNED BOOK – Irig
During World War II, the book collection and archives of the reading room were largely destroyed—burned. In the blaze, everything that had been preserved for decades in this historic institution was lost forever.
As part of celebrating the 150th anniversary of its founding and operation, the reading room also received new facilities. In front of the Serbian reading room and the Cultural Center in Irig stands a unique monument to the burned book, dedicated specifically to the destruction of the reading room’s book collection and archives. The white marble monument symbolizes the phoenix, representing the indestructibility of a people and their culture.
