BATTLE SITE OF 1716 – Petrovaradin

The Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on August 5, 1716, between the Austrian and Turkish armies. The Turks were defeated and forced to retreat, and Damad Ali Pasha himself was mortally wounded. The Austrian army captured a large amount of weapons and military equipment. Eugene of Savoy, the famous commander and even more skilled diplomat of French origin, distinguished himself in the wars against the Turks, first at Petrovaradin in 1716 and later during the conquest of Belgrade the following year, after which the Treaty of Požarevac was signed.

The significance of the Battle of Petrovaradin is even greater because, after it, the Turks were permanently pushed south of the Sava and Danube rivers.

At the top of Vezirac, between Petrovaradin, Bukovac, and Sremski Karlovci, a monument was erected in 1902 from white limestone, 6.5 meters high, dedicated to the great victory of Eugene of Savoy. From the square pedestal rises the main cylindrical base, which gradually narrows and is topped with a cross. On the first cylindrical section, a Latin inscription is engraved. At the base of the cross was a crescent, whose ends are now broken. The pedestal and cross are decorated with various ornamental moldings and floral motifs.

The monument underwent repair and restoration in 2006.
