NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTION – PROVINCIAL INSTITUTE FOR NATURE PROTECTION – Novi Sad

The Provincial Institute for Nature Protection is a professional institution that carries out tasks related to the protection of nature and natural assets in the territory of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina.

The Provincial Institute for Nature Conservation was established by the Decision of the Provincial Assembly on the Establishment of the Provincial Institute for Nature Protection (“Official Gazette of APV”, No. 2/2010). The Provincial Institute for Nature Conservation was originally founded in 1966, and from 1992 it was part of the Institute for Nature Protection of Serbia, functioning as a Department or Work Unit in Novi Sad, until April 1, 2010, when it was re-established as the Provincial Institute for Nature Protection. This has ensured a 45-year continuity in the field of nature protection in AP Vojvodina.

On an area of 800 m², there is a permanent natural history exhibition showcasing the richness of biological and geological diversity of our planet, while different thematic displays rotate throughout the year.

The natural history exhibition is dominated by a skull with tusks of a woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius), excavated in 1947 from the bed of the Tisa River near Novi Bečej. The oldest exhibit features two specimens of the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) from 1910, originating from the Obedska Bara wetlands.
