KUVEŽDIN MONASTERY – Divoš

KUVEŽDIN MONASTERY – Divoš

The monastery is located in the southwestern part of Fruška Gora, north of the village of Divoš. The monastery church is dedicated to St. Sava and St. Simeon. According to tradition, the monastery was founded by Despot Stefan Štiljanović in 1520. The first reliable records come from Ottoman documents dated 1566–1569.

The old monastery church with two domes was replaced by a new building in 1816. The new church was constructed alongside the bell tower, which was built in 1803. The three-sided monastery residential buildings (konaks) were completed in 1810. The iconostasis for the old church was painted by Janko Halkozović in 1722, and the iconostasis for the new church was painted by Pavle Simić between 1847 and 1858.

A Baroque chapel in the monastery cemetery was built in 1788. The monastery was destroyed during World War II.
