ŠIŠATOVAC MONASTERY – Šišatovac

ŠIŠATOVAC MONASTERY – Šišatovac

The monastery is located on the southern slopes of the western part of Fruška Gora, near the village of the same name. The monastery church is dedicated to the Feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos. According to old records, the founding of the monastery is attributed to the abbot of the Žiča Monastery, Theophan, and the displaced Žiča monks, who demolished the original church in 1520 and built a new temple in its place. Reliable data about the monastery date back to the mid-16th century, when the relics of Saint Stefan Štiljanović, the Despot of Srem, were brought to the monastery.

In 1788, the old double-domed church was demolished, and the present temple was built on its site. The three-sided residential buildings (konaks) were constructed at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. The iconostasis and wall paintings in the church were created by Grigorije Davidović Obšić between 1793 and 1795. During World War II, the monastery was destroyed. Today, the monastery complex consists of the restored church and one residential building (konak) southeast of the church.
