FORMER COUNTY BUILDING AND PAINTING “BATTLE OF SENTA”- Sombor

The former building of Backa-Bodrog District is a representative edifice situated in the largest park in Sombor that was created at the end of 19th century. The history of this building resembles the rich and long history of Sombor. The edifice got its present appearance, with the facade decorated in eclectic style, in 1882. Nowadays, Municipal Parliament works in this building. It is consisted of ground floor, two stories and roof with attic windows. The roof was made in the shape of trapezium; there are four vases with garlands and a great mandorla (almond) in the middle. A roof dome looks like the dome of the Venetian church Santa Maria Della Salute, though it is rather smaller. The most important events in the history of the town have taken place in a Ceremonial Hall. There is a 28 m2 monumental painting representing “Battle of Senta”, which was painted by Ferenc Ajzenhut in Munich. It is believed that this the biggest canvas in Serbia. Besides this one, there are other significant works of art in the building, as well.
