The Branislav Nušić” library is located in the building of the noble mansion of the Maldegem family, situated within a protected park, just like the library building itself, which has housed the library since 1968.
The library holds approximately 40,000 books in Serbian and Hungarian. Within its existing departments, there is also a special room dedicated to the legacy of our academician Dr. Vasilije Krestić, containing a collection of scholarly works, predominantly in the field of history.
In addition to its primary activity, the library organizes a variety of cultural events held in its hall, including art exhibitions, concerts, literary evenings and discussions, chamber and theatre performances, and more.
As part of its regular annual events, the library marks World Environment Day on June 5 by announcing a bilingual (Serbian and Hungarian) competition titled “A Tree in the Plain is Sacred and Precious as a Church,” along with a series of music and poetry programs held in the park or on the library terrace.
The Library is also the organizer of the “Tisin cvet” Chamber Music Festival, whose concerts take place every year from September 10 to 20, on weekends. For more than 40 years, the library has hosted gatherings of amateur children’s drama groups from Northern Banat and Bačka (zonal competitions held in April).
Thanks to its space and the wide range of events held in both the library and theatre buildings, this library represents a central hub of cultural life in the municipality of Novi Kneževac.
