When the white blanket covers the wide plains, the traditional farmsteads become a fairytale oasis of peace and warmth. Farmsteads in winter clothing are a place where you will get to know the traditions of these areas and have an unforgettable experience.
Today, the multiculturalism of Vojvodina stands out more and more as its greatest distinguishing feature. Almost nowhere else in Europe will you meet so many different cultures and peoples on your tourist trips. This unique heritage can be experienced in one of the preserved folk houses or through a stay in a rural household. Farmsteads provide a special experience of traditional life. These authentic architectural complexes are characteristic of the Pannonian Plain and represent folk architecture, as well as a special way of life and economy. The word “salaš“ comes from the Hungarian language and means ahousehold consisting of a house and auxiliary facilities for tilling the land and raising livestock. The original purpose was related to the summer stay of people for farming, while a little later the owners of these farmsteads became permanent residents on their properties. Most of them were located in the vicinity of Subotica, Sombor, Čenej near Novi Sad, and there were also some in the Banat and Srem regions. Farmers, a special breed, knew how to rejoice, celebrate and gladly welcome guests, especially in the coldest season, when the work is at a standstill.
Today, farmsteads are gaining a new dimension–they are becoming an indispensable factor in the tourist offer. Families visit farmsteads more and more often. Children can play here safely and learn about village life. If you are a gourmet and want good tastes of Vojvodina cuisine, then the farmsteads are the right location for you. It is a cuisine that was formed by the diversity of cultures and in which the culinary influences of the different peoples living in this area are lined up during just one meal.Farmsteads are known for their hospitality, rich and delicious traditional Vojvodinian meals, along with good wines, brandies and the sounds of tamburitza bands.
