“TURSKI ŠANAC” ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – Bačka Palanka

The Celtic oppidum, known as Turski Šanac, is located near Bačka Palanka, on the left bank of the Danube, in the area called Obrve. In the flat part of the territory, a ring-shaped earthen fortification dominates, with ramparts about 5 meters wide and a preserved height of 1.8 meters. A small-scale trial excavation was carried out in 1970, during which the construction method of the ramparts was determined and remains of a semi-subterranean settlement were identified. South of the earthen fortification lies a probably urbanized, semi-sunken La Tène settlement. Based on finds of pottery and metal objects, it is assumed that the oppidum was established during the Late La Tène period and existed until the mid-1st century AD, and that it was inhabited by the Celtic tribe of the Boii.
