MONASTERY “SREDIŠTE” – Malo Središte

Very long ago this church was called the monastery of St. Archangel Mihail and Gavrilo, and was built by the despot Jovan Branković at the end of the XV century, at the place of today village Malo Središte- Prnjavor. At the time of the building of Središte, despot Jovan also restored the monastery Mesić. The old monastery Središte was one of the monuments of post-Byzantium culture on the border of the East and West. The Serbs were praying there until 1777., when with the Law abut church reforms, which was done by Maria Theresia it was closed. The Monastery Središte was completely restored in the period from 1995 – 2003. It was built on the location 500 m far from the village Malo Središte, on the slope near the road which leads to the Gudurički peak, the highest peak in Vojvodina (641m). On the place where you can see Serbian and Romanian part of Banat district, above the medical spring, was built the first building – little church, which is dedicated to The Wisdom of God- Half of the Fifty. The church was built with bricks in Moravian style. The Eparchy House was built in 1997. on the highest peak of the monastery property and the building of the monastery castle started in 1998. Two-floored building was built on the slopes between little chapel and eparchy house. The little chapel was dedicated to St. Archangel Mihail, is situated on the last floor and it was made like the Sveta Gora monastery according to the places of churches and castles.
