“KARAĐORĐEVO” SPECIAL NATURE RESERVE

“KARAĐORĐEVO” SPECIAL NATURE RESERVE

The “Karađorđevo” Special Nature Reserve is located within the municipalities of Bačka Palanka and Bač. The reserve covers an area of 2,955.32 hectares and consists of two separate natural units: the Mostonga area and the Bukinski Rit area.

Forested areas are predominant within the protected area, covering 77% of its total surface. A further 8.56% consists of agricultural land and 3.74% of water surfaces, while the remainder is used for other purposes, including ponds, reed beds and canals. The natural area is characterised by gently undulating terrain with a dynamic microrelief, which is typical of wetland and floodplain areas.

Bukinski Rit is under the direct influence of the waters of the Danube and exists as a typical floodplain forest complex. The following plant communities have been recorded in this area: almond willow communities, white willow communities, white willow and black poplar communities, and poplar and narrow-leaved ash communities. Bukinski Rit comprises a complex of biotopes providing optimal conditions for the survival of diverse fauna, including numerous rare and endangered species. The area is of particular importance as a natural spawning ground for numerous fish species. A large number of the recorded fish species are classified as rare.

The Mostonga area is characterised by oak and manna ash communities, as well as pedunculate oak, narrow-leaved ash and elm communities. Its floristic characteristics have not yet been comprehensively studied. The presence of different types of vegetation indicates a high degree of ecosystem and floristic diversity. Rare species recorded in the area include the white water lily, snowflake, sweet flag and others.

The bird fauna of the “Karađorđevo” Reserve is of particular importance, comprising 135 bird species, 51 of which are resident species. Species of particular value include the white-tailed eagle, peregrine falcon, white stork, red kite and corncrake. In addition, 24 bird species listed as potentially threatened in Europe inhabit and nest in Bukinski Rit, while 67 bird species have the status of natural rarities. The mammalian fauna includes representatives of rodents, insectivores, bats, hares, voles, carnivores and other groups.

A characteristic feature and fundamental phenomenon of the “Karađorđevo” Reserve is its game fauna, particularly red deer, wild boar, fallow deer, mouflon, Virginia white-tailed deer and roe deer, as well as numerous species of small game, including wildcat, pine marten, fox, badger, polecat and European hare.

The “Karađorđevo” Special Nature Reserve is managed by the “Karađorđevo” Military Institution.
