The Gallery of Children’s Prints of the Ratkovo School of Printmaking “Ankica Ižak” was opened in honor of the remarkable achievements of the visual arts section of the elementary school in Ratkovo.
As the name of the Gallery itself suggests, the greatest credit belongs to Ankica Ižak, an art teacher at the Elementary School “Ratko Pavlović-Ćićko,” where she worked from 1959.
After mastering an old, forgotten, and very demanding artistic discipline—multicolor printmaking, which is now rarely practiced anywhere in the world—her creative work knew no bounds. This technique involves linocut printing from a single plate with more than twenty printed colors and shades. The prints are made by hand, without a printing press, and the plate cannot be reused. The result is only a few unique prints.
Today, children’s artworks from Ratkovo decorate the halls and corridors of their school, as well as the premises of many hospitals, institutions, galleries, workplaces, and military barracks. They have appeared on UNICEF greeting cards, in textbooks, and in children’s magazines—not only in our country but across four continents.
