BATTLE SITE OF 1691 – Stari Slankamen

At the foot of Fruška Gora near Slankamen, on August 19, 1691, the Austrian army, led by Prince Ludwig of Baden, achieved victory over the Turks. The Turks retreated toward Belgrade after losing 2,000 soldiers and the grand vizier Mustafa Ćuprilić. In the Battle of Slankamen, 1,000 Serbs under the leadership of Jovan Monasterlija also fought on the Austrian side. In commemoration of this event, a monument was erected in 1892.
