“GRADINA” ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – Stari Slankamen

At the Gradina site, significant archaeological remains have been found, indicating that the location was inhabited from prehistoric times through the late Middle Ages. The oldest settlement identified so far at Gradina dates to the Late Bronze Age, the Hallstatt A–B period.

The earliest Roman fortification, Acumincum, which can be associated with the beginning of the construction of the limes, developed on the area of the Celtic oppidum. Simultaneously with the development of Acumincum as a fortification, a civilian part of the settlement emerged at its foot, as evidenced by building remains and movable archaeological finds across the wider village area.

On the foundations of the Roman Acumincum a fortress was built in the Middle Ages. Historical sources mention it as early as 1072 under the name Castrum Zelenkamen. By the beginning of the 15th century, it was owned by the Serbian despots of the Branković family. The Ottomans captured it in 1521. Today, the remains of the fortress can be seen at the entrance to the village and on the hill to its north.
