Poppy seed desserts are part of the ritual in households, pastry shops, cafes and restaurants throughout Vojvodina. They are an integral part of the menu offered to tourist groups, at Sunday lunches and numerous festivities.
There are many variations on the theme of poppy seed desserts, but the poppy seed dessert that stands out as a special feature in Vojvodina is definitely poppy seed strudel. This yeast dough dessert is known for its unique taste and method of preparation that requires special conditions. Special mortar and pestle are used for beating poppies, which are hit 365 times, and only men do that. Poppy is placed in a thin membrane of dough and raisins and sour cream are added to it. The room in which the poppy seeds strudel is prepared must not be exposed to drafts, nor may it be entered during the preparation. If the strudel contains more poppy seeds than dough, lemon peel, vanilla and powdered sugar, it is guaranteed that the bites will be delicious and will be remembered for a long time. In addition to poppy seeds, strudels are made with cheese, walnuts, cherries and raisins.
Another delicacy with poppy seeds, mentioned in the famous song by Đorđe Balašević are noodles with poppy seeds or dry pasta with poppy seeds. They are both lean and fat, solemn and ordinary. They win you over with their taste. Their preparation is simple. Ground poppy seeds with powdered sugar are added to the dough. If a poppy grinder is not available, a coffee grinder can also be used. It is served as a dessert, although, along with tomato soup, it used to be the only dish for lunch or dinner.
In addition to the above, desserts with poppy seeds that you can enjoy upon arrival in Vojvodina include various types of cookies with poppy seeds, puff pastry with poppy seeds, cakes and mignoni with poppy seeds, kugelhopf cakes and muffins with poppy seeds and many other sweets with poppy seeds.
