September is the month of grape harvesting. If you travel to Vojvodina at this time of year, you will pick up the sweet smell of this fruit everywhere and notice the hustle and bustle of the locals rushing to their vineyards to harvest the fruits of their labour. The most famous vineyards and wineries in Vojvodina are located in the municipality of Subotica, the municipality of Vršac and the mountain of Fruška Gora. These three wine regions are famous for the quality of wines and the specific grape varieties that thrive in this region.
Numerous events marking the grape harvest are held throughout Vojvodina.
GRAPE HARVEST DAYS – Vršac, popularly called “Grožđebal”, is the largest, oldest and most visited tourist and business event in this region. A rich and quality program is tailored to everyone’s taste. The patron of “Berba” (harvest) is Vinko Lozić, a character from one of the works of the famous Serbian playwright Jovan Sterija Popović. Vinko leads and is the commander of the three-day parade and festivities. At the opening ceremony, the mayor hands him the keys of the city, which he returns at the closing ceremony. During the grape harvest, numerous cultural, commercial and sports events are organized, as well as an exhibition of grapes and wine.
GROŽĐENBAL- Sremski Karlovci, is the biggest event in Karlovci with a tradition of 80 years. During the event, visitors have the opportunity to taste different varieties of wine, made from different grape varieties. This event includes a rich cultural and artistic program, and visitors are offered home made products.
HARVEST DAYS – SUBOTICA is a traditional Palić event marking the completion of works in orchards and vineyards. The event includes an exhibition of fruits and vegetables, an exhibition and tasting of fruit and wine, as well as a Harvest Market with honey exhibition, cheese presentation, and an exhibition of flowers and nurseries. The event has a humanitarian aspect, as part of the proceeds from food and beverage sales go to humanitarian causes.
