The library tradition in the municipality of Žabalj has a long history. In Čurug, a church reading room was founded as early as 1870. The village reading room in this settlement began operating in 1901 and functioned independently until the mid-1960s, when it was merged with the reading rooms in Žabalj, Đurđevo, and Gospođinci.
Since 1900, a Rusyn reading room called “Ruska čitaonica” operated in Đurđevo. In Žabalj, between the two World Wars, Serbian, German, and a young Rusyn reading room were active. The Public Library and Reading Room in Gospođinci was opened after the Second World War and operated independently until the early 1960s, when it was incorporated into the Municipal Public Library.
In 1962, the Public Library was founded in Žabalj as the central library. In the same year, on March 9, the existing Public Library became an independent institution – the Municipal Public Library.
Today, it is a public library serving the needs of citizens across the entire municipality of Žabalj, with branches in Žabalj, Čurug, Đurđevo, and Gospođinci. The total collection at the municipal level is around 60,000 books.
