THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH – Bečej

The first Catholic church was built in Bečej in 1763. The present-day church dedicated to the Dormition was built in the same place in 1830.

The present church was completed 1830. Before that, in the same place the first Catholic church was in 1763 made from mud and covered with reeds. In 1786 the previous church was destroyed and in the same place the new one with a tower was built. The present form of the church was created in 1887. The dimensions are 48.7 x 17 m. The tower was completed in 1923. Stained-glass windows were done by Kratzman Ede in 1892. It was originally done in the style of the early classicism. Later on the church takes on a mixture of different architectural styles. The church interior is richly decorated with the baroque style ornaments.

The altar painting “The Assumption of the Virgin Mary” was painted by Mor Tan from Bečej.
