Početna / Experiences / GEOLOGY AND PALEONTOLOGY SEDIMENT SITE – Grgeteg
Within the monastery complex, there is a geological–paleontological sediment site with a very rich and well-preserved fossil fauna of mollusks, which is of exceptional importance for the geology of Europe. This site has been registered as a natural asset of special significance and designated as a natural monument.
It is located east of the monastery gate, in the Luka stream (Kalina Voda). The richness of its fauna has made Grgeteg well known worldwide as a site of the Lower Pliocene—Pontian stage, within the former Pannonian Sea. More than forty species have been identified, twelve of which were discovered there for the first time.
The site was discovered over a hundred years ago as a notable locality of Pliocene mollusk fauna. Due to its scientific value, it has been under protection since 1974.
