GRGETEG MONASTERY

GRGETEG MONASTERY

Grgeteg Monastery, with its church dedicated to St. Nicholas, was, according to tradition, founded in 1470 by Zmaj Ognjen Vuk. The first reliable records date from 1545–1546.

The monastery was abandoned before the Great Migration and was restored in 1708 by Metropolitan Isaija Đaković. Around 1770, the present Baroque church was built, later renovated at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century according to the plans of architect Herman Bole. At that time, the residential buildings (konaks) surrounding the church on all four sides were also restored.

The old stone iconostasis, painted by Jakov Orfelin between 1772 and 1774, was demolished during the monastery’s restoration. The icons on the current iconostasis were painted by Uroš Predić in 1901–1902.

Near the monastery, along the stream, a geological profile exposing layers from the upper tertiary to the entire quaternary was discovered. It is protected by the Institute for Nature Conservation, as it is one of the rare sites in the Pannonian Plain where sedimentation occurred continuously.
