Tisa Blooming – Novi Bečej

Tisa Blooming – Novi Bečej

The Tisa Blooming begins most often in mid-June. Scientists assume that this natural phenomenon has been occurring for several hundred million years. The “bloom” is a phenomenon characteristic of the Tisa River and the Yangtze River in China, and it refers to insects, not flowers.

The larvae of the Tisa mayflies emerge to the surface from the riverbed mud in which they have spent three years. They shed their outer skin, spread their wings, and begin a mating dance in order to reproduce and ensure the continuation of the species. This phenomenon is truly unique and lasts only a few days, from early morning until around 7:30 p.m., over a period of three to four days.

After three years, the fertilized eggs develop, hatch in the Tisa River, and the cycle begins again.

A cultural event named after this natural phenomenon is dedicated to the Tisa Blooming. It is held with the aim of drawing attention to the importance of one of our three largest rivers.
