Bačko Podunavlje – UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
In the northwestern part of Vojvodina, along the mighty flow of the Danube River, lies one of Serbia’s most valuable natural areas – the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bačko Podunavlje. Since 2017, this unique area has been part of the global network of biosphere reserves within UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme, in recognition of its outstanding natural value and its model of sustainable development.
Covering an area of 176,635 hectares, Bačko Podunavlje encompasses vast floodplain forests, river branches, wetlands, marshes, sandy riverbanks, and Danube islands, making it one of the largest preserved floodplain areas along the middle course of the Danube. This area is also part of the famous “European Amazon” – the transboundary Mura–Drava–Danube Biosphere Reserve, the first UNESCO site of its kind connecting five countries.
Bačko Podunavlje is a true paradise for nature lovers and those seeking an active holiday. Visitors can enjoy boat rides through peaceful Danube backwaters, photo safaris, birdwatching, hiking and cycling tours, as well as authentic experiences of life along the river. Traditional villages such as Bački Monoštor add a special charm, where nature, culture, and hospitality come together to create a unique experience.
This is a place where nature and people have lived in harmony for centuries – through fishing traditions, riverside inns, local gastronomy, and a way of life shaped by the water. For travelers seeking peace, authenticity, and untouched landscapes, Bačko Podunavlje is one of the most remarkable destinations in Vojvodina.
