GRGUREVCI SITE – Grgurevci

GRGUREVCI SITE – Grgurevci

In the center of Grgurevci, there is an underground structure with a vaulted ceiling, rectangular in plan and oriented north–south. The building was constructed from regularly cut stone blocks. The northern and southern walls each contain a niche with a profiled arch. Beneath a doorway with a lintel, on the northern wall next to the niche, a threshold was discovered. The floor of the room is mostly preserved and consists of compacted earth over which wooden planks had been laid. There is a ventilation opening in the vault. Among the movable finds, in addition to pottery dating to the Ottoman period, animal bones and iron objects (pegs and horseshoes) were discovered. The northern and eastern parts of the structure have not been explored. Local tradition connects the name of the place with Grgur. Archaeological excavations and preventive protection works were carried out in 1978 and 1980.

The text is taken from the book “Cultural heritage of Serbia” published in 2007.
