Autumn is an ideal time to visit Vojvodina, especially for connoisseurs and wine lovers. Vojvodina is a region that boasts a dense network of wine routes, as well as quality wines, which are famous far beyond the borders of the Republic of Serbia. Grapes have been grown on the territory of Vojvodina ever since the Roman Emperor Probus planted the first grapevine on Mt. Fruska Gora (from 276 AD). The suitable soil and climate of these areas have resulted in high quality grapes and unique flavors of Vojvodina wines.
Fruska Gora Viticultural Area
Fruska Gora wine region is located on the slopes of Mt. Fruska Gora and surrounds the area of the Fruska Gora National Park. The jewels of Fruska Gora viticultural area are the Karlovci vineyards. Wines from these areas have been served in European capitals, from the Viennese court to English pubs. Karlovci vine growers and wine makers are still working to maintain the glory of Karlovci wines. The authentic wine of this wine region is bermet, a wine of sweet taste, with over 20 different herbs and spices. According to some reports, the bermet was on the Titanic wine list. The better known wines of Fruška Gora are Italian Riesling, Fruska Gora Riesling, Frankovka, Zupljanka, Traminac and Portugizec.
VrsacViticultural Area
According to written data, Vršacviticultural area is among the largest in Europe in the 19th century. Today, white wine varieties, muscatotonel, pinot blanco, Italian Riesling predominate here. Indigenous and old varieties that are cultivated include zupljanka, smederevka, sasla, bela and kreaca. This region is recognizable by its unique old wine cellars, where friendly hosts will host you and offer quality wines with authentic flavors. Founded in 2005 in the Vrsac area, the Banat Wine Order of Saint Theodore placed Vrsac among one of the largest wine cities in Europe.
Subotica Viticultural Area
Subotica viticultural area is located in the far north of the Republic of Serbia. The sandy terrain, the temperate continental climate and the quality grape varieties result in tasty wines, popularly called – sand wines. Italian Riesling, Rhine Riesling, Kevedinka and Chardonnay are the most successful here.
The Potiski Region
The Potiski region extends in the area of eastern Backa and western Banat, in the north from Kanjiza to the mouth of the Tisa in the south. The authentic varieties of these areas are MuskatKrokan, Castel and Muscat Otonel.
