THE CHURCH OF ST ARCHANGEL GABRIEL – Veliki Radinci

The Church of St. Archangel Gabriel in Veliki Radinci near Sremska Mitrovica was built on the site of the former church in 1780 as a one-nave structure with the apse on the east side and the Baroque bell tower built onto the west. The bell tower was destroyed during the World War II, and during the post-war reconstruction thus the height thereof is shortened. The church was plastered and covered with a gabled roof. The facades are articulated by low molded skirting and the cornice and the vertical pilasters are placed. The windows are simple and arched. There is a very important iconostasis in the church. Unknown woodcarver carved the ornament with the characteristics of baroque and classicist style, characteristic in shaping of the altar partition at the end of the eighteenth century, while icons were painted in 1792 by Jakov Orfelin, one of the most important Serbian artists from the last quarter of the eighteenth century. Although Jacov Orfelin is the painter of antique preference in his opus Veliki Radinci the new elements of classicist drawing discipline, solid modeling, and certain forms of rigidity in expression can be observed. In the first zone there are icons, doors and tympana. In the second zone there are two rows of standing figures of the apostles, and in the third zone were the icons close by the composition of the Crucifixion. Jakov Orfelin painted the icon of St.John the Baptist for the Bishop’s throne in the temple. Conservation and restoration works were carried out in 2000.

The Church in Veliki Radinci is a cultural monument of great importance.
