THE GALLERY OF NAIVE ART – Kovačica
Početna / Experiences / THE GALLERY OF NAIVE ART – Kovačica
The Gallery of Naïve Art in Kovačica was founded on May 15, 1959. On that day, the painters promised to donate one painting to the gallery each year, gradually forming its collection. The management of the Cultural Center decided to provide space for the gallery on the first floor of the Cultural Center building. Over time, the gallery’s collection slowly grew, and when there were no exhibitions, works from the gallery’s fund were always on display. At that time, it was largely an amateur activity, as the gallery was only a section of the Cultural Center without professional staff.
In the 1970s, a collaboration was established with the National Museum in Pančevo, which had experts and art historians. This marked the beginning of professional gallery management, including the introduction of a registry for the paintings. Since January 2009, the gallery has operated as an independent institution. The gallery organizes various cultural events, the most notable being the traditional Kovačica October exhibition. Today, the gallery has a building surrounded by the studios of naïve painters and holds a collection of 821 paintings (as of November 2012).
The Kovačica Gallery of Naïve Art is the most visited cultural site in the Kovačica municipality, primarily due to painters Zuzana Halupová and Martin Jonáš. The permanent exhibition features 31 of Zuzana Halupová’s oil paintings on canvas, along with her easel, diplomas, and a bust. Martin Jonáš’s permanent exhibition includes 28 oil paintings on canvas. The gallery receives an average of around 6,000 domestic and 4,000 international visitors per year. Domestic visitors are mostly school groups, while foreign visitors often arrive on Danube tour excursions.
Gallery opening hours: Tuesday – Friday from 08:00 to 16:00, weekends from 10:00 to 15:00. Closed on Mondays.
