In Čortanovci, near the Danube, at the Prosjanice site, lie the remains of the Roman fortification Ad Herculem. There once stood a stone fortification—the largest in this section of the Danube limes—which protected the wider area from Cusum (Petrovaradin) to Acumincum (Slankamen), and further to Rittium (Surduk).
Based on coins discovered at the site, the fortification was most likely built at the end of the 3rd or the beginning of the 4th century. It remained in use until the late 4th century, when it was destroyed by fire during a Barbarian attack and was never rebuilt.
Today, at the Prosjanice site, visitors can see the circular wall of the southeast tower (over ten meters in diameter) with a height of just over one meter, and the walls of the main rampart, nearly two meters wide, extending from the tower toward the west-northwest. Research has also shown that part of the fortification lies in the riverbed of the Danube, including two towers and the northern rampart.
