Border – army building of Petrovaradin regiment, 9. Border line regiment was built after 1747. when Mitrovica became the regiment residence. ( Today there is the Institute office for protecting the cultural monuments).
The institutional protection of cultural monuments in Srem area and partly Mačva, is organizes for four decades, and started the foundation of Community institute office for protecting the cultural monuments in Sremska Mitrovica in December, 1961.
Historical circumstances made this area rich in material evidences with the biggest importance for the culture and history of Serbian people, national minorities as well, which exist here. After the end of the Second World War, monasteries in Fruška Gora were completely damaged. There were ruins as well as hundreds of orthodox churches. The monumental heritage was put on a constant and fast disappearing.
After a few decades it represents a new epoch in protecting the cultural heritage. The great part of the heritage was saved, protected and is used in a further cultural heritage.
Cultural monuments are the vision of an epoch and spirituality of a nation, the voice of destiny creation, and national individuality as well as the creative energy where the history put its base. Every monument has its own history which exactly is its identity and integrity.
On the Srem territory, under the jurisdiction of the Institute, there are 215 buildings, and 29 NKD have the status of great importance : 23 cultural monuments, 1 cultural- historical entirety, 3 archeological foundations and 2 important places.
