THE INSTITUTION FOR FOSTERING CULTURE “SREM” – Sremska Mitrovica

The Institution for Cherishing the Culture “Srem” is public organization in the area of culture, education, science, art and creative work, was found on December, 2003. The institution issues informative publications and propaganda material which introduces the public about its work and affirmatives cultural-educational work and all the shapes of amateur and professional creative work.

According to the calendar of The Amateur Society of Serbia and Vojvodina it makes the plan of communities performances (recitals, drama and musical creative work) and organization of it.

Follows and helps the work of the national minorities (Russians, Gypsies…).

As the part of publishing activities, the most important is the magazine for science, art and culture “Sunčani Sat”. The magazine was found in 1992., it is printed once a year (about 1000 copies), and cherishes cultural- historical heritage of Sremska Mitrovica and the whole Srem.

In Sremska Mitrovica, within the project “I like SM” in organization of cultural and educational community, 10 years in a row there was held the Orator`s festival, Sirmium lux verbi – Sirmijum the light of words. The institution for cherishing the culture “ Srem”, inherited the organization of Orator`s festival in 2004.

The festival was re-born on the antic monuments in one of the oldest cities in Europe and is held on the locality of ancient Sirmium. At the beginning of new era the city had some educated people who left the trace of eternal value. Among these traces is also the rare bronze sculpture of orator, from the beginning of new era, made in the honor of true words. In the city, in the old century, famous writers and biographers visited it, and considered Simium as the “densely populated and famous mother of the cities”.

The festival got the reputation and represents the most important cultural manifestation in our city. It is international festival, and till now there were representatives of Greece, Russia, Bulgaria, Serbian Republic, Italy.
