Twenty-two years ago, the Cultural and Educational Center “Thurzó Lajos” was founded in Senta. The shared goal of the institution is to contribute, through its programs and overall activities, to meeting the cultural needs of citizens, to connect the work and programs of artistic groups and associations, to further deepen and achieve closer cooperation with cultural and educational institutions, and to serve as a place where cultural interests can be pursued and addressed professionally.
The founder is the Municipality of Senta, and the organizational units of the Center through which it carries out its activities are:
City Museum – Established after World War II, it was reorganized in the 1970s as the Ethnological Museum of the Tisa Region, becoming a scientific institution, whose primary activities include research in all ethnological fields, material and technical preservation of objects, collections, and documents, their processing, and publication. The museum also holds local collections from the city and surrounding area. The Art Colony, functioning within the museum, is the first colony among post-war art colonies and has, for 45 years, brought together artists who consider it important to document this region, its world, era, and life of its inhabitants through their visual expression.
City Library – Housing more than 60,000 library units, the library, in addition to its central branch, operates five smaller mobile libraries. While not among the largest libraries in Vojvodina, it is fully automated and maintains a rich local collection. In recent years, alongside promoting reading and books, it regularly organizes exhibitions, literary meetings, and various club activities, all of which deepen the spiritual life and overall work of the library.
Workers’ University – In addition to its primary function of organizing various educational programs, it also brings together associations whose shared interests, need for knowledge, and use of free time keep them active (bio-club, language learning, hobbies, etc.).
Cultural Center (Dom Kulture) – With its “open cultural activities,” the Center demonstrates results both in communication and information, as well as in the creative sphere, primarily through strong collaboration with the museum and library and support from professional staff. In addition to the “Senta Stage,” performers can develop their artistic skills in the Citera Ensemble and mixed choir “Delibab,” jazz and folk groups, Music Group Zyntharew, the chamber stage “Miroslav Antić,” and KUD Stevan Sremac. Numerous cultural events are held regularly in the Center, which has a 300-seat hall, an exhibition hall, and two smaller theater spaces.
“Tisa” Cinema – After several years of pause, it is once again striving to meet the desires of the city’s cinema audience, continuing the tradition that began with Senta’s first cinema screening in the summer of 1908. The building also hosts two dance schools and regularly organizes classical music gatherings and dance evenings.
