MAIN STREET – Zrenjanin

It is a separate entity of the preserved urban core and a protected monument, and also the most important residential, commercial and business part of the city. Since 1716 and the departure of the Turks, it has been the central city street. Until 1879 it was called the Great Bridge Street, then until 1919 Hunyadi Street. From 1919 to 1941 it was called t King Alexander Street, and during the German occupation it was named Hermann Goering. Since 1944, it has been the King Alexander I Karadjordjević Street. Almost every house in this street has an interesting history, and many people who live in it contributed to the development of the city in many areas of life and work. Just a few of these houses are going to be mentioned here.

House of Stevan Bukovac from 1905, was built in the spirit of Neo-Renaissance with particularly expressed facades towards the Freedom Square and the main street.

House of Bance is the first modern building of the left front of the street and the first dedicated department store, which was in 1906 built by the owner of the furniture factory Miša Bance.

House of stonecutter Tuner Teodosije was built in 1900 by the plans of István Barta. Because of the unusual Moorish-style building was named “Scheherazade”.

Palace of Justice was built from 1906 to 1908 according to the projects of Pest architects Sandor Ajner and Markus Rimer. It is one of the few purpose-built buildings from that period. It was built specifically for the needs of the city in the period of development of the capitalist economy. Today, the District, Municipal and Commercial Court and Municipal Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Public Attorney’s Office are located in it.
