The site is located on an alluvial terrace, 500 meters from the left bank of the Danube. Excavations carried out since 1972 have investigated around 650 graves of a necropolis dating from the late 8th and the first half of the 9th century.
Three different populations were buried here simultaneously: people of shamanistic beliefs (burials in rectangular pits with or without coffins, with vessels containing food and drink placed at the feet, equestrian graves with the ritually killed horse of the deceased, and rich grave goods), bearers of Judaic culture (graves with niches marked by fragments of Roman bricks on which a seven-branched lamp—the menorah—was later incised, along with rare inscriptions such as “Jehuda,” “Jahve,” and “Israel”), and Slavs (shallow burial pits with modest grave goods and urns containing cremated remains). South of the necropolis, a settlement extended over a distance of 4 kilometers, where a goldsmith’s workshop was also uncovered.
