NATIONAL LIBRARY BEČEJ – Bečej

The city library Bečej was found in 1976., by fusion of, until then, independent libraries in Bečej, Bačko Gradište and Bačko Petrovo Selo.

The first signs of the library activities on this place were found in the middle of XIX century, in 1862., was found The Serbian Reading Room and in 1868., the Hungarian Reading Room. Apart from this sections in the next few decades were found a lot of “libraries”. That means that every city organization had it’s own reading room with hundreds of books. The library today has the status of the head library and is situated on the main street in one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.

The building was built at the beginning of the last century, about 1908-1909., by the family Viši. Karolj Viši was from 1883-1920., the Kings public recorder in Bečej. In 1946., the building was nationalized and until 1960., was working as the Home for the homeless from war from the territory of FNRJ.

Since 1960., in the building works the city library Bečej.

Book fund: about 98.000 books on Serbian, Hungarian and English language.

It consists of : The section for the adults and the section for the children.

Branches: In Bačko Gradište, Bačko Petrovo Selo and Radičević.

Services: books lending outside the library, encyclopedia using, periodicals and publishing in the library, book promotions, literal meetings, exhibitions, creative workshops for children, photocopying.
