The City Library of Novi Sad is situated in the building which is legacy of Anka and Arsa Pajević, publishers, patrons and benefactors of Serbian people. The library is working on the tradition of Serbian reading room in Novi Sad which was found on September, 23rd 1845. The first president was Jovan Rajić, junior, Novi Sad’s lawyer. The first Constitution, the rules about organization and work, were given to the Reading room in December 1860. In 1861.the president of the Reading room became dr. Svetozar Miletić, and as the secretary there came Jovan Jovanović, later Zmaj. In 1861.the Reading room founded The Serbian National Theatre, the first professional theatre for the Serb’s. It was the protector of the work of The United Serbian Youth, The Serbian Singing Association and to many other institutions and organizations. It’s individuality The Serbian Reading Room in Novi Sad had until 1958., when it was united with The Library “Đura Daničić”, the regional libraries of the city and later with the lending department of the Library of Matica Srpska, assumed the shape and manner of behavior which it has even today as the City Library of Novi Sad. The City Library of Novi Sad has more than 23.000 users and fund of about 450.000 books, is one of the biggest public libraries in the country. From 87 employed there are 66 experts and they are the resource with which we can compete with any challenge. As the main library for the South-Bačka district, it projects and follows the development of the librarian activity within the web of 250 libraries and librarian units.
