Below we bring you an interview with Mihailo Berček, a journalist, a photographer and the editor of the magazine and portal Top Serbia. In Vojvodina, there is almost no destination or event that has not found a place in this magazine. Mihailo’s view of the current situation, the ways of recovery of the tourism sector and the trump cards of tourism in Vojvodina – these are the topics of conversation that we bring to you below.
- As someone who professionally follows the economy, which sector do you predict will recover quickly after the pandemic?
Tourism, catering, hotel industry are in the group of those who have suffered the most severe consequences. Regardless of the fact that tourism professionals tried to be responsive and in contact with tourists, the result was, compared to the usual, a mere “drop in the ocean of tourism”. It was similar with the catering industry, even worse, and nothing better with the hotel industry.
Of these three groups, I think that tourism, which was also barely active during the pandemic, will recover the fastest, unlike the situation in the hotel and catering industry. The epidemiological situation was somewhat in favor of domestic tourism because Serbian tourists, by force of circumstances, began to realize that they can have a great vacation in Serbia with its natural potential being one of the pearls of European tourism. It is possible that such an attitude towards domestic tourism will continue this year, as well as next year, again due to the epidemiological situation.
- We know that you are also a keen photographer, that the people and nature of our country are a great inspiration to you. If you would single out one of your photos as particularly dear, which one would it be?
I love every photo that “tells a story” and has meaning. It is mostly a reportage photography, which should complement the captions. I am also extremely satisfied if someone likes my portrait photo, with which I try to present a person in the best possible way. This is not easy at all, because a good portrait requires good light, a good moment, and a good eye, that is, quick anticipation, finding the position in which the photograph of the person in question would be best. I’m not saying that there were no dissatisfied people I photographed, but there are incomparably more of those who like my photos, which can be seen on Facebook, where people use the photos I took to congratulate each other on birthdays, holidays, or publish them as profile pictures.
- Can you recommend to our readers the cultural events in Vojvodina they can visit during the upcoming summer?
Manifestations and events should be loved if you attend them. If you have an a priori problem with that, you better give up. I love almost every event that is not kitsch, because I always look for the best and most beautiful in them. Especially music events, which has become an integral part of almost every respectable event. Reputable events almost always include several simultaneous ones, so, for example. if you go to the Beer Days in Zrenjanin, you can visit the Beer Museum, attend an art and literary promotion, visit the phenomenal Zrenjanin City Museum, and during the day listen to the Zrenjanin Philharmonic, old town or rock music, attend folklore ensembles festivals with the ensembles coming from the entire world. Novi Bečej is also one of the leaders in event tourism, the one that is alive, meaningful, and whoever comes to this city will not regret it. Sombor has so much to offer, and increasingly so does Bač, a city along the Danube and with the Franciscan monastery, fortress and monastery Bodjani, which marks the 300th anniversary in 2022.
- Points of interest in Vojvodina or a region that you think will be attractive destinations for summer vacations during the upcoming season?
There are many of them and it all depends on the affinity – whether you are a fisherman, an adventurer or something else. In this area, tourism in Vojvodina has really advanced, because today there are numerous grange farms with interesting and quality offer. There is an increasing number of wineries that not only have highly prized wines, but also have tasting rooms, with great sommelier who can brighten up your day after a tour of some other destinations in the vicinity. This can be the Vršac, Palić or Fruška Gora wine-growing region. Those who like to be by the water also have a good selection on offer because Vojvodina has a number of beautiful lakes for swimming, such as those in Bela Crkva, Fruška Gora lakes, on the Danube, Tisa, Old Tisa… Vrdnik with its thermal water and pools at the FruškeTerme, the Premier Aqua, and theTermal Spa offers convenience not only for relaxation, but also for a stay on the Holy Mount of Fruška Gora. In a word – points of interest are all around us, we just need to discover them.
- A book that you will take with you on summer vacation?
It will be Growth of the Soil by the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun
