The first temple in Žabalj was mentioned in 1720, but it was demolished during the movement to the current location. The present Temple of St. Father Nikolai was built in 1835. As many others it also undergone the destruction during the rebellion in 1848/49. After that the place was given back its old name, Žabalj. The temple was built in Baroque style with half-circular alter apse, and the iconostasis is unique in our region. It was built out of multicolored artificial stone according to the plans of Svetozar Ivačkovića in 1884, in the style of Biedermeier, and the icons were the work of several masters. The temple is 36m long, 12m wide and the tower is 53m high.
