In the Middle Ages, Vrdnik had a castle and a town. According to the Hungarian and papal documents it is mentioned under the name of Castrellum Rendek or Rendek. A part of town under fortified place was surrounded by the city wall. Best preserved from the old medieval city is a horseshoe shape eighteen meters high guard tower . Vrdnik tower belongs to the medieval military architecture buildings and represents an important strategic and defensive point. Recent studies have pointed out the existence of Roman foundations referring to this important fortification. Lonely tower withstood the times and people, and it is the only residue of the mighty ancient city of Vrdnik.
