“Titelski breg“is located in Vojvodina, on the territory of south-east Bačka, in the Municipality of Titel. It represents a lonely loess plateau. It has oval shape, which is the consequence of the erosive effect of Danube and Tisa waters, since it extends along the right bank of the lower flow of the Tisa, not far away from its delta to Danube. The surface of this plateau is 79, 5 km2, the maximum length is 18 km, and the average altitude is 120 m.
There are many reasons why “Titelski breg“is considered the most interesting loess plateau in Central Europe. In loess-pale sol sequences of “Titelski breg“ a reliable manuscript for studying pale climatic and pale ecological evolution in the last 600.000 years has been preserved. In this area different erosive forms occur: vallies, loess pyramids, hanging vallies, chasms, shoulders, surduc, as well as dual forms of fluviokarsten erosion. From accumulative forms there are flooding, drains, escarpments.
According to the data which botanists established while researching “Titelskom bregu“ during the last two centuries, the flora of the Titel plateau includes over 630 plant species. The space is dominated by steppe of relic character. The most important steppe species are: Sternbergia colchiciflora, which is important as postglacial relict, the relict of exothermal time – boreal and it is found on the red list of the flora in Serbia, there is also dwarf iris (Iris pumila), Adonis vernalis, Allium rotundum subsp. Waldsteinii, as well as critically endangered Allium atroviolaceum and Sysimbrium polymorphum. A special specificity of „Titelski breg“ represent the group of rear couch grass and wipers. It should also be pointed out that on “Titelski breg“ grow around 40 plant species (herbs), which are included in the Order of control in use and traffic of wild plant and animal species. Based on evaluation of important botanical areas in Serbia, and according to the criteria IPA (Important Plant Areas), floristic and echo systemic features of the habitat served as the basis for including “Titelski breg“ in the national IPA area of Central and Eastern Europe.
This area is an important for bird nesting. Up to now around 140 species have been recorded, but the real treasure reaches the number of 180 species (on the “Breg“around 125). The total number of the known nesting birds is around 100 (on the “Breg“ itself 80). Because of its undoubtedly ornithological values “Titelski breg” is included in the list of areas of international importance for fauna of birds IBA (Important Bird Areas).
On the slopes of “Titelski breg” the presence of 25 rare and endangered species has been established. Sporadic field data suggest a high level of biological diversity and the presence of rare and endangered species of mammals. The most important is tekunica, globally endangered species, which is even rarely found in Vojvodina, and it represents a natural rarity protected by law. It is a typical representative of low-grass steppe areas, which are maintained by pastures. It is fond on the slopes of “Titelski brega”, as well as on the other pastures between Vilovo and Lok.
Uniqueness of Serbian “Titelski breg“, as a steppe area nearby three rivers and two deltas (the delta of Begej into Tisa, and Tisa into Danube), leaves much space for the development of tourism, individual and group visits.
