Drama scene
The first script about theatre art in Serbia is connected to Bečkerek, in the XVIII century, and for the name of the teacher Jelisejić and his amateur pupil’s groups. The Grain Square was altered in 1839. into the theatre. According to the legend, the theatre appeared as a great love of one noble citizen to the well-known Budapest actress. In order to be closer to her he built the theatre. That is how the Bečkerek theatre became one of the oldest theatres in Yugoslavia. The baroque interior is of great beauty , it’s acoustical and functional, and in the base it’s of a chamber style. The way it looks today on the front was given to it by basic reconstruction and adaptation in 1985. Inside the theatre, thanks to saved original plans, it is restored and authentic. For about hundred years the theatre didn’t have the professional troupe ( the theatres from Hungary, Germany and Serbia were guests here) and from 1946. The theatre has it’s own assemble which works on three scenes: drama, chamber and puppet. The has the name of a well-known Serbian actor from the Romanticism period, Toša Jovanović.
