CRNA ĆUPRIJA – Žabalj

Crna ćuprija (Black bridge) is the area of 472 ha, located 10 km from Žabalj towards the Tisa, on the road leading from Novi Sad to Zrenjanin. In January ,1942 the Fascist carried out mass executions of patriots from the Municipality of Žabalj. In the horrifying action of the Horti followers, which conceived and organized gripped the southeastern part of Bačka including larger towns such as Novi Sad, Čurug and Bečej, several thousand innocent people were killed. Crna ćuprija is used to connect the two banks of the river Jegrička, but by the regulation of the Danube – Tisa – Danube Canal had lost its function. The monument was posted on that site. In the memory of the struggle of the people of Sajkaš against the Fascist terror the 9 meters high memorial sculpture has been posted not far from there, the masterpiece of Jovan Soldatović.
